About The Artists
Papernut Cambridge

Website

We are thrilled that Gare Du Nord recording artists Papernut Cambridge will be returning to the Country Soul. Fronted by Mr Ian Button this pop collective is a fun/ramshackle concoction of jangling/Velvetsy guitars, pedal steel, minimal drum kit, string lines etc, topped by Button̢۪s own Bolan/Chiltonesque vocal, usually liberally doused in WEM echo (you can't beat echo). It̢۪s a floating membership - they̢۪ve had 12 onstage before, but the regular lineup features such fine musicians as Darren Hayman and Jack Hayter (both formerly of Hefner), Robert Rotifer, Robert Halcrow (from Picturebox), Ralegh Long the list goes on. Having just released their brilliant new record 'Outstairs Instairs' (Gare Du Nord) to rave reviews where it's fragmented memories conjures up 'the UK's golden era of pop, the late 1960s and early 1970s' (Neon Filler) in order to come together to fulfil a delightful and unifiying whole it's simply 'Classy stuff that you absolutely must hear' (Popgrupen)

Well it’s been awhile but we are extremely pleased that Picturebox will be returning to the Country Soul in March. Based in Canterbury this fine pop quartet have released 3 LP's on the very cool Gare du Nord record label. Pop music with rough edges and lyrics about girls, football, British TV, animals....in fact anything at all. Picturebox's last LP 'Escapes' (Gare du Nord, 2018) combined an unabashed enthusiasm for pop tunes and indie hits with Syd Barrett era psychedelia. Robert Halcrow the band's songwriter "has the ability to write great songs, songs that will remain with you long after they have finished and will make you appreciate the beauty of simplicity in our often complicated, meaningless lives" (Louder Than War).

Drew Morrison and the Darkwood

Website

The house band are looking forward to treading the CSS boards once again. The Darkwood are Nick Steyn (drums), Ian Gant (guitar), George London (bass & singing) and songwriter Drew Morrison (guitar and singing). The band's central vision of a music touched by influences ranging from Alt Country, Pop & Rock N' Roll all tinged with 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now.
